Bringing Scrooge into this modern context was bold in the best way. It’s accessible for all ages, in line with the character, and gives the story a poignant edge.
I also commend the whole team’s work on making such a fully realized environment with such minimalist use of lighting cues and props. There was such a strong sense of place, and there was a satisfying trust in the audience.
What I didn't like
I never expected to walk away with the realization that you can perform such complex story anywhere. The way this is set up, it could be done on a street corner, in a shopping center, in a park with little to no setup. It shows that the true essence of the theater is in performance and imagination.
The only time I was snapped out of my suspension of disbelief was when a projector was used to establish a sense of place, or to focus in on (spoilers) Scrooge’s grave. I was immersed in the performances and believed the world and locations, but when so much was achieved throughout the entire piece without visual aids, I felt the inclusion of them did not add at that point.
My overall impression
It’s really hard to do this story in a way that necessitates retelling, but Colleen and her cast were able to put up a show absolutely worth seeing!
