First and foremost, I liked the writing. The dialogue was almost musical in it’s pacing and quippy-ness. It reminded me the playwright sarah rhul.
I absolutley loved the mean HR character. The long ranty lines she said in the first scene, were maybe my favorite. The whole cast was great, and did an excellent job serving the language and working the audience, but the HR actor was particularly special with her neurotic bitchy energy and vocal fry.
I also really liked the folk song played on guitar that happened in the middle. For that one scene it became an intimate chamber musical (which is my favorite genre)
And then lastly I loved the philosophy. I like where the story ended up and how it made all the set up scenes pay off. I liked the various perspectives (including the audience)
A really fun surprising night at the theater. Strongly recommend.
What I didn't like
SPOILERS to follow
this is a minor thing, but all the deities were costumed in greco roman style tunics with gold laural crowns, even though they were portraying Gods from varied cultures. I understand the deciscion not to do that. The tunics looked uniform and cohesive, and got the point across. But in future productions it would be awesome to see a bunch of aesthetics and costumes from world mythologies depicted. A partnership with an awesome designer would make this soar.
My overall impression
I didn’t know what to expect going in, but I was charmed in the first few lines and thoroughly enjoyed it. The writing and dialogue are witty and the actors have great chemistry and comic chops. I loved the unexpected twist, the philosophical commentary and the audience participation.
