Lance Washington, aka Lando Chill; makes music which is classified as hip-hop, but isn’t tethered to a single genre; encompassing elements of funk, gospel, jazz, indie rock, psychedelic, and folk. Originally a poet from the southside of Chicago, his debut full-length For Mark, Your Son arrived on Mello Music Group in 2016. The album was an intense self-examination inspired by the loss of the rapper’s father, who died of a heart attack when Lando was a young child. Lando Chill’s second album, The Boy Who Spoke to the Wind, appeared in 2017 and was named #26 on Bandcamp Daily’s 100 Best Albums of the Year. The album was influenced by Paulo Coelho’s book The Alchemist, and contained a more abstract, experimental sound than his prior releases. Since 2016, Lando Chill has often teamed up with multi-instrumentalist and producer The Lasso out of Detroit, resulting in a singular sound only possible through a true symbiosis of vocalist and producer. The duo has took a leap forward with Lando Chill’s 2018 release, Black Ego; a collection of songs that is equal parts west coast funk and desert trip-hop, threaded together by Lando’s bold vision, and 2020’s LandoLasso; a musical return to the stratospheric, orchestral sound the two eclectic souls are so known for. Lando’s first solo LP in years, If I’m Being Honest, was released in 2022 after a 2 year hiatus & signaled the triumphant return of the southwest’s most versatile and dynamic vocalist. 2023 was even busier for Lando; with the eclectic pop inspired EP named “The Common Denominator is Us”, produced by Boston native Teddy Roxpin, released in the summer and finishing off the year with another offering with the evergreen Lasso, entitled Casting Spells, ministering a haunting sonic self analysis over the emotional landscape Lasso is known for. Currently, Lando is back in school at his alma mater, The University of Arizona, for Human Rights Practices and just completed a fellowship at the University of Kansas under the Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies Department. His next feature length project is slated to release later this year; but in the meantime; Lando is jumping back into his childhood with his return to the stage.
